A WORD OF ENCOURAGEMENT

Lynn | Thoughts & Reflections | Monday, February 4th, 2013

With all that is going on in our culture, our country, and the world, it is so easy to become discouraged and wonder how anything one individual can do will make any difference at all.  A very dear friend sent me a reminder today of a sentiment so basic that it actually gave me pause and a new perspective for the day.    Here it is…

This reminds me of the old story of the boy and his dad walking along the beach after a big hurricane. The beach was covered with starfish. The young boy periodically would bend down, pick up a starfish and toss it into the ocean. As he continued to do this his dad said, “The beach is covered with starfish; tossing a few into the ocean will not make a difference.” The boy bent down, picked up another star fish, tossed it into the ocean and said, “It made a difference to that one!”

That’s it, isn’t it?  We get so bogged down in bad news that our faith becomes “little.”  We forget that God controls the big picture.  And He has it all under control.  Our job is to make a difference at our level and in making that difference, glorify God.

We alone can rarely change the big picture, but we can make a difference in our daily picture.  We can hold fast to our faith and know that even if we do not see the immediate results of our small actions, we can be sure that they spread outward in ever-expanding waves pushed on by the breath of the Spirit.  Saving all the starfish may seem overwhelming but we only need to focus on saving one at a time.

Lord, forgive me my “little” faith.  Use me in spite of myself and remind me Lord that you are in control, no matter how sad, chaotic, bewildering, incomprehensible, or desperate things become here on earth.
